Inca Trail

Overview

Along this route, you will follow in the footsteps of the Incas towards Machu Picchu Sanctuary. This path keeps the mystery of our ancestors and shows the incredible way that road development influenced the way in which the Incas integrated a Great Empire.

Throughout these four days, you will become part of the Andean world as well as have the opportunity to walk along the route, visiting different archaeological groups while also enjoying the environment as well as the varied ecosystem.

You will eventually reach the highest pass at over 4200 masl, where you will have a beautiful view of the Sacred mountains of the Incas and then descend through the spectacular Cloud Forest. Once there, you will have a chance to see the wonderful biodiversity in flora and fauna before reaching the entrance to the citadel of Machu Picchu.

It's a hard walk but the feeling of reaching the top and getting those fantastic views is like nothing else!

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco-Huayllabamba (approx. 6 hours walking)
Take an early morning bus to the head of the trail. Continue along the Urubamba River to the first archaeological site, "Llaqtapata". Once there, you will have the chance to enjoy lunch in a beautiful setting. After a rest, your trek will continue through the side valley, eventually gaining altitude until you get to the last village, Huayllabamba, where you will camp for the night.

Day 2: Huayllabamba – Pacaymayo (approx. 7 hours walking)
After a healthy breakfast, start climbing up towards the first pass, "Warmiwañusca" (4200 m.a.s.l). The climb will take most of the morning. From here, descend for about 2 hours into the valley to the next campsite, "Pacaymayo".

Day 3: Pacaymayo – Wiñaywayna (approx. 8 hours walking)
Today is going to be the most diverse day. Start in the morning with an ascent to the second pass, "Runcuracay" (3900 m.a.s.l) and descend on the other side for about 2 hours to reach the beautiful archaeological site of "Sayacmarca". After having explored this unique place, continue on the original stone path of the Incas through a semi-tropical cloud forest onto the third pass "Phuyupatamarca" (3800 m.a.s.l). Hopefully you will be graced with good weather, allowing spectacular views of the surrounding snow peaks and the valley below. From here it is all downhill walking to the camp site at "Wiñaywayna" (one of the most beautiful sites in the area due to its construction and setting).

Day 4: Wiñaywayna –Machupicchu - Cusco (2 Walking hours Approx.)
Early in the morning, after a tasty breakfast, hike for another 2 hours through the cloud forest and eventually reach the famous sun gate known as "Intipunku" from where you have the first breathtaking view and best panorama of the mysterious "Machu Picchu". A short walk brings you down to the site. After a little break, visit "the lost city of the Incas" and enjoy a guided tour for approx. 2 hrs. You will then have some time to yourself to explore and absorb the atmosphere of this amazing place. Descend by bus to the village of Aguas Calientes. After lunch, take the train back to Ollantaytambo and transfer to Cusco.

Optional - Overnight in Cusco for a well-deserved rest in a hotel in the city!
