From here visit the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, a 1550 square kilometre park that that is located halfway between São Luís and the Piauí border. Its name refers to the sand dunes that stretch across the landscape, looking like ‘lençóis’ or bedsheets. The park also includes stunning beaches and fascinating flora and fauna, as well as some wildlife such as birds and turtles.
Your final stop will be Salvador, the beautiful Colonial city that was once the capital of Portugal’s New World Empire. Enjoy the energy and history that this city has on offer, as well as its colourful architecture and turquoise waters which surround it.
Day 1: Arrival - Fortaleza
You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in Fortaleza with a guide.
Day 2: Fortaleza
After breakfast, enjoy a sightseeing tour through the city, showcasing the beauty of the city. Fortaleza the country’s fifth largest capital in terms of the number of inhabitants but despite this, the town has retained its quiet, peaceful and hospitable atmosphere. The modern downtown is packed full of top-rate hotels, international class restaurants and excellent entertainment, while the old town which still preserves the best of its past and traditions. The tour will take in the old light-house in Mucuripe, Our Lady of Assumption fortress, the historical and Anthropological Museum, the Central Place, the former Public Prison tourist center (formerly a public prison) and much more.
Day 3: Fortaleza - São Luis
After breakfast, you will transfer from your hotel to Fortaleza airport for your short flight to São Luis, the Capital city of Maranhão state in the Northeastern region of Brazil. Upon arrival you will enjoy a panoramic sightseeing tour of the beaches of Calhau, São Marcos and Ponta D ́areia, lake of Jansem, quarter of São Francisco, squares Dom Pedro II, Benedito Leite, João Lisboa, Deodoro, Gonçalves Dias, Central Market, Historical Center, Artists’ House, House of Maranhão, Craftsman Shops, fountain of Ribeirão and Artur Azevedo Theatre.
Day 4: São Luis
After breakfast, travel to Barreirinhas in a private land transfer, the gateway to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Upon arrival, take a 4x4 vehicle for a 3-hour tour to Lagoa Bonita and Azul, as well as the small dunes of the National Park of Lençóis Maranhenses. Your accommodation this evening will be at Barreirinhas at a traditional Brazilian ‘pousada’ or inn.
Day 5: Lençóis Maranhenses
After breakfast, you will have the chance to embark on a speed boat ride known as “voadeiras” to cross the “ Rio Preguiça”, or Preguiças River. Here you will have the chance to explore the traditional fishermen villages of Vassouras, Mandacarú and Caburé as well as the other side of the dunes. Afterwards will be transferred back to your accommodation in Barreirinhas.
Day 6: Lençóis Maranhenses
Today you will have time to enjoy the area at your leisure, or embark on optional tours to see more of the surrounding area.
Day 7: Lençóis Maranhenses - Salvador
After breakfast this morning you will depart by private land transfer to São Luis Airport, where you will take the flight to Salvador, the capital of Bahia State. Upon arrival you will be met by a guide and transferred to your accommodation for the next two nights.
Day 8: Salvador
After breakfast you will depart on a historical tour of Salvador, once the Colonial capital of Brazil. Your tour will showcase two distinct aspects of Salvador, the new and the old, concentrating on the early expansion of the city. This tour is a very good orientation for those wishing to explore the city further. Begin in the modern suburb of Barra at the mouth of the Bay, famous for its lighthouse, before visiting the old historical section of town, the Pelourinho area. With the largest and best preserved colonial architecture in the America's, make sure you take to stroll through the narrow, bustling streets lined with buildings in pastel shades of an age gone by. Finally visit the church of São Francisco with its exuberant gold-leafed Baroque interior and Pelourinho square, the heart of the old town. Your afternoon will be at your leisure to explore further, or relax at the hotel.
Day 9: Departure
After breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for your onward journey.

In fact, your entire tour can be protected under our ATOL licence by booking your international flight with us. Please note that flight tickets are non-refundable and 100% of your flight ticket price is payable on tour confirmation.
As with international flights, Tango Tours' friendly and knowledgeable staff are on hand to book your internal flights for you if required. For some itineraries, you need to arrive at a particular destination at a required time/date therefore, it is vital that you book the correct flights and times of arrival. Our ATOL licence will protect your whole tour if your internal flights are purchased through us. Please note that flights are non-refundable and 100% of your flight ticket price is payable on tour confirmation.
To confirm your booking with Tango Tours, we require a payment of 20% of the ground-based arrangements and 100% of all flights. The remaining balance of your tour is then payable 10 weeks prior to departure. For any bookings made within these 10 weeks, the full amount is payable.
