Overview

This jam-packed tour of the sights of Peru manages to cover a whole host of famous landmarks as well as some hidden gems and leaves you with plenty of time to relax too!

See the beautiful colonial city of Lima, explore historical Cusco and the intriguing Sacred Valley of the Incas. Naturally, Machu Picchu is next on the agenda! You will get time to see the site in all its glory along with some other fascinating sites of historical interest. See Puno, stopping on the way at Andahuaylillas - a small colonial town with a superb church often missed by most tourist routes.

Travel to Lake Titicaca and explore by speedboat! An enthralling way to see this famous body of water. In the centre of the lake are the intriguing floating Uros islands. Spend time with the Uros community on these incredible islands and enjoy their amazing hospitality - a real once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival - Lima
Today you will arrive in Lima where you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel.

Day 2: Lima
This morning you will have a sightseeing tour of Lima, followed by a panoramic tour of the most traditional residential areas in the capital San Isidro and Miraflores districts. In the historic centre you will see important colonial monuments such as the Plaza de Armas, the Plaza San Martin and the Cathedral, and a guided tour of the San Francisco Monastery. You will then continue with a visit to the Larco Herrera museum.

Day 3: Lima - Cusco - Sacred Valley
Today, transfer to the airport for your flight to Cusco City. Upon arrival you will be met by your guide and transferred to the Sacred Valley of the Incas along the Urubamba river. Spend part of the day at the town of Chinchero, 35 kilometers northwest of Cuzco. The townsfolk here are famous for having preserved traditional Andean weaving techniques. They also set up a market in the town square to sell handmade crafts from around the region, this is a fun, lively affair! Nearby is the town of Maras, and you will visit its impressive salt pans where the finest salt in the world is extracted. Next, you will travel to Moray and tour the enormous circular and semi-circular agricultural terraces built into the top of a hill overlooking the Urubamba Valley and used by the Incas as a botanical laboratory. The last stop of the day is at Ollantaytambo; an Incan military, religious, and agricultural center located in the highest point on the mountain. From the perspective of the archaeological site, you will look down upon the town of the same name and see its incredibly narrow streets and canals that have not changed since the Incas constructed them!

Day 4: Sacred Valley - Machu Picchu - Cusco
Your adventure starts onboard the Expedition train. After your arrival at the city of Aguas Calientes, you will disembark and then board a bus that drives you to the actual Machu Picchu archaeological site. You will have a guided tour of this incredible ancient city and some free time to explore the area on your own. In the afternoon, return to Aguas Calientes for the train back to Cusco.

Day 5: Cusco
This morning, enjoy a sightseeing city tour of Cusco and the surrounding archaeological sites, including visits to the Koricancha Temple, the Main Square, the San Cristobal Viewpoint, from where you’ll enjoy a beautiful view of the city, the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, the amphitheatre of Kenko, Puca Pucara and finally, you will stop by the Inka’s Expression art workshop, which introduces you to artists working with silver, paint and wood; the perfect visit to further understand Andean art.

Day 6: Cusco - Puno
This morning you will be transferred to the bus station for your bus to Puno, which travels through magnificent scenery of the valley and stops at a number of important sites en route. First stop is Andahuaylillas, which has a beautiful 17th Century church containing an impressive organ decorated with angels and cherubs. After that, the ruins at Racchi -also known as the "Temple of Wiracocha". Then you will visit the archaeological site of Puca-Pucara, basically a military camp that also functioned as an administrative centre. Finally, you arrive at the bus station in Puno.

Day 7: Puno - Taquile & Uros Islands
In the morning, make a one-day tour on the spectacular waters of Lake Titicaca. The first stop, is a visit to the incredible floating islands of the Uros, also known as 'People of the Lake'. These islands are built out of layers of totora reed obtained form the lake and are used as housing and trade centers for the native Uros. They travel by amazing handicrafted rafts around the lake and between islands too. Continue the tour onto Taquile Island, where the community are known for keeping their traditions, customs and colourful clothings. The islanders are skilled craftspeople and express, in each, piece astonishing techniques developed by their ancestors for centuries. Return to Puno for the evening after the tour.

Day 8: Departure
Transfer to the airport for your flight back to Lima for your onward travel.

    International Flights
    Getting to Peru is straightforward from most areas of the world, but you may find that the choice is bewildering, or you’re not sure about the easiest route. Tango Tours are experienced in planning flights and we are very happy to advise you on the different choices available. Because prices tend to increase closer to your departure date, we advise that you buy your international flight tickets as soon as you have made a decision about your tour. As an ATOL bonded tour operator, we can assist in your purchase of international flights. In fact, your entire tour can be protected under our ATOL licence by booking your international flight with us. Please note that flight tickets are non-refundable and 100% of your flight ticket price is payable on tour confirmation.

    Internal Flights
    As with international flights, Tango Tours' friendly and knowledgeable staff are on hand to book your internal flights for you if required. For some itineraries, you need to arrive at a particular destination at a required time/date therefore, it is vital that you book the correct flights and times of arrival. Our ATOL licence will protect your whole tour if your internal flights are purchased through us. Please note that flights are non-refundable and 100% of your flight ticket price is payable on tour confirmation.

    Payments
    To confirm your booking with Tango Tours, we require a payment of 20% of the ground-based arrangements and 100% of all flights. The remaining balance of your tour is then payable 10 weeks prior to departure. For any bookings made within these 10 weeks, the full amount is payable.

    Accommodation
    Let us know what standard of accommodation you require for your tour - we offer a range of standards to suit your requirements. These are subject to availability.
