Classic Colombia


This Colombia tour has it all! Visit the picturesque capital Bogotá, where you will be immersed in the cities' culture and history - touring of a number of famous sites, historical landmarks and museums as well as a stunning view from 500m above the city. Keep your eyes open for street art too, as colourful art painted onto walls all over the city really brings the place to life.

Explore San Agustín Archaeological Park- an official UNESCO World Heritage site described by UNESCO as ‘The largest group of religious monuments and megalithic sculptures in South America stands in a wild, spectacular landscape’, a must-see if visiting Colombia. These statues stand on what is believed to be sacred ground and really have to be seen to be believed! See then the city of Cartagena, where you will get some fascinating tours of classic Colombian historical sites such as San Felipe Fortress, the old city and a spectacular panoramic view of the whole city from the top of the Monasterio and Iglesia de La Popa.

End the trip in style and travel by boat to some of the most beautiful beaches in South America, either Rosario or Barú Islands where you can snorkel, go diving, take boat trips to explore the stunning scenery and wildlife or just relax on the golden sands. What a way to end a trip of a lifetime to Colourful Colombia!


Day 1: Arrival - Bogotá
Today you will arrive at El Dorado airport in Bogotá, the colourful capital right in the heart of Colombia. You will be transferred to your hotel, where you can relax and enjoy your evening.

Day 2: Bogotá City
Today is all about exploring the abundant history and culture Bogotá has to offer and appreciating the stunning Spanish colonial time architecture that makes this place so special.

The tour begins at the historic centre of Bogotá known as La Candelaria and the main square Plaza de Bolivar, then you will go onto The Capilla del Sagrario - a gem of religious architecture.

You will take a look around the famous Botero museum and art gallery, and onto the fascinating Gold Museum which has a permanent exhibition of some 32,000 pieces of gold.

You will end the day riding the cable car or funicular railway up to Santuario de Monserrate, a symbol of Bogotá. At 500 mts above the city, the site offers the incredible panorama views of the city on one side and the Andes on the other.

Day 3: Bogotá - Neiva – San Agustin
After Breakfast you will be transferred straight to the airport in Bogotá and fly to Neiva.

On arrival at Neiva airport, you will be met and depart to the north to visit the town of Villavieja where you can visit the Museo Palenteológico and then see the incredible Tataco Desert, crossing crevasses eroded by wind and water.

After lunch, you will travel to San Agustín located 217km away. This pleasant and scenic journey, of roughly 5 hours, allows you to enjoy spectacular views of the extensive floodplains of the Magdalena River valley in balmy temperatures of 20ºC. Passing plantations of fruit, maize, coffee, rice paddies, cotton and wheat.

When arriving in San Agustin, you will check into your hotel for a well-deserved rest!

Day 4: San Agustín Archaeological Park - Alto de los Idolos
In the Morning you will visit the San Agustín Archeological Park, a World Heritage Site declared by the UNESCO in 1995. See these strikingly enormous stone statues up close, standing on what is believed to be holy and sacred ground.

You will then walk to the ceremonial Fuente de Lavapatas – an impressive ceremonial site carved into the rocky river bed, before heading up the hill to the Lavapatas terrace where you can take in a remarkable view over the surrounding countryside and visit the small Museo Arqueológico.

After lunch, you go onto the rural town of Isnos to visit two other important archaeological sites - Alto de los Ídolos and Alto de las Piedras. Where you will be able to see some incredibly well preserved tombs that still show some of the original paintwork and some of the largest stone figures discovered so far.

In the evening Return to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: San Agustin - Neiva - Cartagena
Day 5 is a bit of travelling around but will be worth it! After breakfast you will travel by car to Neiva airport – approximately a 5-hour journey. Then a flight to Cartagena, via Bogotá, where you will be greeted and taken to the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 6: Cartagena Panoramic City Tour
Start the day with a panoramic view of Cartangena city from the top of the Monasterio and Iglesia de La Popa. Constructed in 1606 this church and monastery is located at a height of 140masl and resembles the stern of a galleon, from this fantastic viewpoint you can enjoy 360º views of the city and the sea.
Continue on to the San Felipe Fortress, erected in honour of the poet from Cartagena, Don Luis Carlos López. You can walk around the fortress and learn how the castle was constructed, the engineering feats, the tunnels, underground galleries and passageways.
Next stop is Ciudad Vieja (old city) to visit the Convert and Church of San Pedro Claver which was built in the middle of the 17th century, a feat of architecture that is well worth a visit.
Lastly, continue to the handicrafts zone of the Bovedas, a collection of impressive archways built into the city wall of Cartagena. Nowadays it is used as an artisan centre where you can appreciate local handicraft.
You have the afternoon free to enjoy the area and explore what Cartagena has to offer before returning to the hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 7: Cartagena
Take today to enjoy the city and the surrounding area in your own time - why not sample some local cuisine or explore the cities historical downtown. Alternatively, you can enjoy one of our optional activities.

Day 8: Cartagena - Rosario or Barú Island
After breakfast, transfer in a regular or private boat to the hotel of your choice on Barú or Rosario Island and check-in.

Day 9 & 10: Rosario or Barú Island
Free days to relax on the beach and enjoy the stunning costal scenery. If you are on Barú it is recommend the beaches of Playa Blanca, Playita de Cholón, Playa de los Muertos and Playa Bobo.
On the Rosario islands, we recommend to visit the reef of the archipelago of Nuestra Señora del Rosario as well as the islands of Tesoro, Múcura and Maravilla.
Enjoy snorkelling and other water sports, observation of the local flora and fauna and scuba diving amongst others things – paradise!

Day 11: Barú or Rosario Island - Cartagena
Today, you will depart by boat back to Cartagena. Upon arrival at Cartagena pier, transfer to the hotel and check in, enjoy your last evening in Colombia by sampling the night-life and culinary delights in Cartagena.

Day 12: Cartagena – Bogotá
After breakfast it is time to say goodbye to Colombia! Transfer to the airport for flight to Bogotá then your onward journey home.

    International Flights
    Getting to Colombia is straightforward from most areas of the world, but you may find that the choice is bewildering, or you’re not sure about the easiest route. Tango Tours are experienced in planning flights and we are very happy to advise you on the different choices available. Because prices tend to increase closer to your departure date, we advise that you buy your international flight tickets as soon as you have made a decision about your tour. As an ATOL bonded tour operator, we can assist in your purchase of international flights. In fact, your entire tour can be protected under our ATOL licence by booking your international flight with us. Please note that flight tickets are non-refundable and 100% of your flight ticket price is payable on tour confirmation.

    Internal Flights
    As with international flights, Tango Tours' friendly and knowledgeable staff are on hand to book your internal flights for you if required. For some itineraries, you need to arrive at a particular destination at a required time/date therefore, it is vital that you book the correct flights and times of arrival. Our ATOL licence will protect your whole tour if your internal flights are purchased through us. Please note that flights are non-refundable and 100% of your flight ticket price is payable on tour confirmation.

    To confirm your booking with Tango Tours, we require a payment of 20% of the ground-based arrangements and 100% of all flights. The remaining balance of your tour is then payable 10 weeks prior to departure. For any bookings made within these 10 weeks, the full amount is payable.
