The Lost City of Colombia
OverviewThis challenging yet deeply rewarding trek will take you far into the mystical jungle-laden mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Jungle paths, stunning waterfalls and amazing natural pools, all amidst a towering green mountain landscape are just some of the highlights of this adventure. Spend evenings at one with nature in hammocks covered only by a thatched roof!
After the trek you can then travel down the coast for a well-deserved relax in the stunning scenery of the Caribbean coastline at Playa Koralia. This area is an absolute paradise of white sandy beaches surrounded by lush jungle, natural pools and crystal clear seas.
Day 1: Arrival – Santa Marta – Adán camp (camp no.1)
After arriving in the city of Santa Marta, you will stay in a hotel for the evening for some final home comforts, before travelling to El Mamey for the start point of the exhilarating three-day trek through the rainforest up to the lost city. Today you will trek to Adán Camp - campsite one, which eases you into the trek with a relatively leisurely walk through the lush, green rainforest and surrounded by a variety of exotic wildlife! After a challenging uphill section, there is a natural pool to swim in, where you can cool off before a sweeping decent leading into the campsite for your first night in the wild.
Day 2: Adán camp - El Paraiso Camp (Camp no.3)
After waking up in your hammock in the middle of the rainforest (always a fantastic and bewildering experience!) you pack up and embark on this, the longest trekking day. A bit more of a challenge, today will be some hard walking but you can take your time and enjoy your unbelievable surroundings. The first part of the day takes you uphill and across some picturesque terrain, including some local farm land. Next, after another swim in a natural pool, (you will see these all along the trail and they become a saving grace when you are hot and sweaty) you stop for a well-deserved lunch at Camp no.2 - Wiwa Camp. From here, you go through a significant amount of incredibly varied terrain eventually delving deeper into the tropical jungle, crossing rivers and passing by a couple of genuine Kogi village communities. You continue all the way to Camp no.3 (El Paraiso), located only 1km downhill from the site of the Lost City. You spend the night here, in a hammock under thatched huts surrounded by incredible vegetation and landscape.
Day 3: El Paraiso camp (camp no.3) - Ciudad Perdida – Wiwa Camp (Camp no.2)
After a short walk from the campsite, you reach the starting point of the 1,200 stone stairs you’ll need to walk (and scramble!) up to reach the terraces of the lost city above. It’s not an easy climb, so take your time to carefully ascent the steps where you will eventually reach the lower chambers of Ciudad Perdida. Spend some time at the ruins observing its different structures, sectors and learning about its history from your local guide. It has a fascinating past, however much about the city and civilization remains the subject of speculation, making it even more intriguing! It is a spectacular area that has an overwhelmingly peaceful atmosphere, you will want to spend as much time as possible enjoying this serene and moving place. After you have spent some time at the ruins, head back down the trail stopping at Camp no.3 (El Paraiso) for a quick lunch before progressing on to Wiwa camp (camp no.2) for the night.
Day 4: Wiwa camp (camp no.2) - Adán camp (camp no.1)
After a night at Wiwa camp, trek on a challenging stretch back to Adán camp where you will spend the night. It may sound like you are re-tracing your steps a little, but this trail is constantly changing and there are always new and exciting things to see – no two walks are ever the same! The changing weather conditions, for one, are so unpredictable you could be sweating and out of breath at one moment and drenched in monsoon rains the next, but that’s all part of the fun and the impulsive nature of this rewarding route!
Day 5: Adán camp (camp no.1) - El Mamey – Playa Koralia
After a good night’s sleep at Adán camp it’s time to set off for the last stretch back to El Mamey. You will arrive roughly back where you started for a celebratory lunch! From here you will travel South down the coast by car to Playa Koralia. This sunning journey along the Caribbean coastline gives you time to relax and enjoy, taking a well-deserved rest! You arrive at Playa Koralia in the evening where you can explore the area in your own time, sampling the local cuisine and returning to a hotel for the night.
Days 6: Playa Koralia
Today you have the whole day to yourself to make the most of the paradise that is Playa Koralia. A favourite destination for both travellers and Colombians alike, the pristine white sands and clear blue seas are exactly what you need after a few days of hard walking! Enjoy a day on the beach and exploring the stunning surrounding area.
